OUR PAST

The Lander Volunteer Fire Department was established around the turn of the century and officially chartered on October 14, 1901, by Mayor William G. Johnson. The original fire fighting equipment was a hose cart pulled to the fire scene by firefighters. Over the years the size of the department and equipment evolved until we received our first motorized fire engine, a 1927 American La France. The department has since restored this unit and respectfully calls it "Ole Red". It is presently used for public relations functions. The department took a gigantic leap forward in 1967 with the completion of the two story fire station. 1983 saw the completion of the fire station addition that allowed the Lander fire Department to become one of the finest fire stations in the intermountain west.

Along the way we have added apparatus which allows us to respond with such varied equipment including rescue, Class-A Structure Engines and Aerial Tower.

THE PRESENT

You as a member will be required to learn the Standard Operating Procedures of the department, by-laws and rules of conduct as outlined in this booklet. Plus, you will be required to be proficient on all apparatus and equipment used by this department.

Firefighting is one of the most hazardous occupations in the United States and as a future firefighter you need to realize the serious nature of your occupation and the need to stay proficient. Fire does not distinguish between "paid" and "volunteer" firefighters when it comes to killing or maiming.

THE FUTURE

As the City of Lander continues to grow so will the department. You, as an active member, will contribute to the department's future. The department will only be as good as you make it. Innovation in firefighting technique and equipment do not change yearly but daily. It will tax your time, skills and abilities to keep this department modern, efficient and cost effective.
